[Redondo Beach] [Japanese Cuisine] Izakaya Bincho

Izakaya Bincho

112 N International Boardwalk
Redondo Beach, CA 90277
(310) 376-3889

"Hole in the Wall" Izakaya. The first thing for me to do when I came back from this restaurant to write how cool/good it is.

- This restaurant has almost no sign from outside, only insiders would come here or those adventurous people who bypass the restaurant yet its still full.
- They only open for dinner, and they are exactly how izakaya should be in Japan. Very informal, friendly atmosphere. Everyone is very laid back there.
- The food price is very reasonable and the taste is superb.
- The customers were all Japanese, age varied from young to old. That tells you this place is catering to true Japanese food lovers.

Now the Food:

I noticed his frying skill is like one of the best.
I highly recommend:
1) Fried Chicken Nuggets, Japanese Style
2) Fried Spicy Chicken Wings
3) Agedashi Tofu
4) Meatball Hot Pot
5) Chicken Zousui
6) Stewed Pork Belly

The food is a bit towards salty side so if you don't like the salty stuff, its not for you.

This place has more meat dishes than seafood dishes. If u want seafood, the Seafood market place next door is a good alternative.

I can't wait to return to that place!

Among the Chinese Boba places. This is definitely one that's worth mentioning. The drinks are far superior than Tea Station or other similar competitor's drink.

We tried their Pudding Milk Tea and Coffee Jelly Milk Tea. They were both creamy and delicious. The drink automatically comes with honey boba. So if you don't like boba like myself, tell them ahead of the time when ordering. Best of all, they use the cane sugar when making their drink instead of the syrup. Its not as sweet as other stores where I have (MUST) request 75% reduction of sugar or I will have diabetes within a year or so. They also gives big chunks of real home made pudding..soo good. Coffee jelly were smooth and full of flavors too.

Service was nice and efficient. Due to the size of the store, it can be packed from time to time but you can buy it to go and receive 10% discount on all drinks.

tip: come with small party (2 to 3 people max) and you should be seated fast. I think if you have a big group (like 6+) you'll have to wait for a long time at this place.

What's up with the hype of this place??

Not so good FUSION food = ConFUSION food

I agree with other posters regarding the hype of this place. Yes, it has a fantastic view. Yes, the services were nice. Yes the presentations are nice but No, the food is nothing that WOW me.

This place is owned by the same Korean owner that runs Pacific Crab company next door but this one he decided to make it Japanese-French Fusion cuisine. The view and interior is beautiful. I like the little details that they are very thoughtful about. However the food, its not worth the price tag in my opinion.

We ordered the "Experience" and the "Voyager" options of the set meal so we can try a bit of everything.

Tofu Bread with Seaweed butter - The original tofu bread and seaweed butter is a nice thought, but the butter itself is hard. It will be nicer if its softer and easier to spread.

"Experience" consists of more meat dishes.
1. Roast duck appetizer was very dry and tasteless. It has alot to do with the texture of the duck itself but I was hoping the sauce and make up for it, but didn't.
2. Tuna Tataki Salad with onions - I liked the dressing but I prefer Albacore instead of tuna since tuna meat is not as tender as Albacore.
3. Crispy Seabass with Dashi Broth - one of their signature dish and it does presented well. The fish was flaky and the broth goes well with the fish.
4. Australia "Kobe" Filet Mignon - Bad Bad Bad. How can they named "Kobe" when its actually "Wagyu" beef? Kobe is just the name of the place where the cow was raised/breed at. The steak itself has nothing that really stands out compare with other USDA meats. However, the sauce (Veal Port Wine Reduction Sauce) was BITTER, something wrong with the wine? or the chef uses it to highlight the taste of the meat but failed to do so? I had much better steak at the "Steakhouse" in Torrance for the real Grade A5 Japanese imported Wagyu Beef (Same quality as CUT in Beverly Hill, yet fraction of price).
5. Dessert - Almond Cake, Chocolate Cake & Orange Jello. Orange jello was the most creative item out of the three.

The Voyager (Seafood-focused meal)
1. Salmon Tartare - It was FISHY. I hardly had salmon thats fishy but here is the first. Argh , I wonder if chef actually taste the dish before they bring it out?
2. Crab Salad - Small yet presented nicely.
3. Fried Oyster, Rockefeller style - Crispy outside with juicy oyster inside. very delicious choice.
4. Tamari Soy Marinated Black Cod - I actually liked miso marinated fish more but this one is still delicious. But I can relate to how people complain about small portion..its about 4 to 5 bites max size
5. Seafood Bouillabaisse (1/2 portion) with Cheese risotto - I am actually surprised that its not as delicious as I thought. They suggested the risotto goes well with the bouillabaisse..but no.....seafood is OK fresh, the soup was not that delicious...I am disappointed.
6. Dessert is same as the other course. I would think they should be different?

Our dessert actually took 30 mins to came up. However while we were waiting for so long, our waitress was nice enough to comp our coffee/tea. Everyone's dessert came out at the same time, and it all seems like the same dishes (I guess something happened in the kitchen that night).

Would I go back to the restaurant? I doubt
Would I recommend people for the view? I will, the view and the service was outstanding, but the food was much less than desired experience especially with the expensive price tag.

[Gardena] [Japanese Cuisine] Shin sen gumi Yakitori

Shin Sen Gumi Yakitori

18617 S Western
Gardena, CA 90247
(310) 715-1588
Came here for the anniversary special. 4 of their lunch sets were discounted to $5 each. Pretty good deal and we did get seated quickly. The review is for the lunch set only (Saba set, Yakitori set, Yakitori Bowl, and fried chicken set)

1. Yakitori Set. Both of the set lunch came with salad, miso soup, and croquette. I don't know the taste of the yakitori is inferior due to the special or not, but for sure it does not worth the $9 dollar price tag in my opinion. The chicken was not grilled to my liking and the meatball was lack of flavor, their yakitori sauce was nothing to write home about either. I had much better yakitori at Kappo Honda. I actually think the salad dressing was the best part of my dish.

2. Saba set. Exactly the same thing except the yakitori was substitute for the fish instead. The fish was also grilled to order too. The portion seems bigger since they give 1/2 fish instead of 3 skewers. However, the fish had some bones and it does taste fishy when the fish started to cool down. Its a better choice of the two, but still not worth the $8.50 price tag too.

Overall, I was disappointed with their sister Hakata Ramen Chain, and yet this Yakitori chain too. I believe this place is popular but I do not think their taste is truly authentic. Its already modified to local's liking so its good if you want some bargain or u don't mind the not-so-authentic taste yakitori. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend this place to others unless they have discounted their regular menu.

Highly recommended. This is one of the best Korean BBQ Place in town.

I remember my first visit back in college. It was very upscale dining experience for Korean BBQ. The service was top notch for Korean restaurant. They do not rush you and they do NOT have the attitude when they serve you and expect you to pay top $$$ for tips.

The meat is always delicious. You can tell that they actually uses better quality of beef rather than those cheap meats thats being served at other all you can eat Korean BBQ joint. The Kalbe and Bulgogi that I had was tender, moist and very minimal fat/tendon.

The dining area divided into the indoor (non smoking) and outdoor (smoking) so fits different people's needs. They do have very good ventilation system so you will not smell like a piece of smoked meat when you are done with your meal.

They were very generous with their side dishes too. They usually refills without asking.

Tip: Come during lunch if you want to sample their food and paying only fraction of the dinner price.

Overall: Quality meats, Friendly Services, Everything looks clean & fresh. Will definitely recommend.

[Long Beach] [Hotels] Westin Long Beach, CA - Bi-Levels Penthouse Suite

The Westin Long Beach

333 E Ocean Blvd
Long Beach, CA 90802
(562) 436-3000

For more pictures of this hotel including the room, please visit (http://travelsmart8.blogspot.com/2010/04/westin-long-beach-ca-bi-level-suite.html)

A Typical Business/Convention Hotel located a block away from Long Beach Performing Art Center and Metro Station.

Location: As described above, its convenient even if you are not driving (proximity to the LA metro, if you do rely on LA's public transportation system).

Exterior: Fan Shaped, give the room facing the ocean excellent unobstructed view towards the harbor, other rooms have the view of the city.

Lobby: Very grand with 3 stories tall atrium gives plenty of sunlight in the lobby during the morning hours. Complimentary WiFi in the lobby area.

Check-in: Very fast since there were no line. Staffs were efficient. Some were very nice and trying to help yet others were just trying to finish their shift, the staff's quality varies a lot during my stay.

Room: The room itself started to show wear and tear (The hotel was renovated 4 to 5 years ago). The decor is not as modern as you would expect at a Westin Hotel but still the Heavenly Bed is always Heavenly. Its still very clean and comfortable.

The room I got was actually one of their bi-level suite. The view was awesome. top floor with the 2 floors tall window. The room itself break into wet bar, guest bathroom, dining room for 6, and living room with Bose sound system (first floor). On the second floor, there are two offices, bedroom, and a master bathroom with dual sinks and a jacuzzi tub/shower combo. Its definitely big enough to host a big party in this room.

Fitness Center: Located on the 5th floor with cardio and weight equipments. There's also a sauna , jacuzzi and swimming pool. Many people were sunbathing during my stay.

Parking: $15 with in & out privileges

Overall: Nice business hotel. I wouldn't recommend people to stay here if they want to sight see LA but its definitely nice for business travelers.

Nice hotel situated in a quiet neighborhood in NYC. 3 blocks away from Grand Central Station so its an easy walk. Not far from tourist attractions as well. This is one of the hotel that provides bigger room in NYC as well so if you want more room, this is a good choice for you.

Lobby: Small but adequate. There's a wetbar adjacent to the hotel. Very trendy looking, packed with people every night but due to the size of the lobby, they are not like the typical W that you have seem elsewhere. Got in around 830am due to red eye flight. The lady whom checked me in explained to me that room wasn't ready so I dropped my bag then started to explore the city. Room was ready by noon-ish.

Room: Got upgraded to Fantastic Suite on 3rd Floor. The room is Huge (esp for NYC standard). Living room had a nice B&O stereo system, a sofa bed and a wet bar thats perfectly suitable for a party! The bedroom is very spacious too. Typical W standard (older standard, more dark feeling than the new white/metallic furniture that other W's uses). AC works fine (Thanks, no motion sensor). The only complain is the bathroom. Very small! They don't even have much space if you have more than 1 person to put all of ur stuff on the counter.

I was told that this hotel was going to renovate their room, but due to the economy situation, this plan has been postponed. However, the room itself is very comfortable and clean. It may be slightly outdated for W standard but I would still recommend this hotel when visiting NYC.

Acura experience is very cool! Save me some time travelling to the station and I feel like VIPs!

The Hotel is no longer a part of starwood hotels starting 4/15/2010.

[Lomita] [Italian Fusion] iL Chianti Restaurant, Lomita, CA

Il Chianti

(310) 325-5000

The outside of the restaurant looks very quiet...we thought its dead but its not. The outside patio is no longer available for seating, but the inside was quite full actually. We love our seats in the upper deck!

We were here for dinner and we were fully aware that the services are slow. But they waiter were trying hard to help (He was the only waiter for the entire restaurant, how odd).

The French Bread (White & Wheat) comes with Olive oil and onion dressing. Not too salty nor sour, goes well with the bread!

I asked bout the chef's special pasta, it was no longer served. However, we did follow the yelper's recommendation and tried the following dishes:

Appetizer. 1) Blue Shell Crab Roll - Delicious soft shelled crab topped with sesame, fried to perfection. Served with tortilla and lettuce, 1000 islands dressing & sweet salty dressing/ the one u have for peking duck. In simple term, it is the Peking duck without the green onion and have crab instead of duck. Its so delicious, juicy, yet crispy crab busted out the flavor in your mouth. Yummmm

2) Garlic Clam - Fresh clam served with the garlic sauce. Kinda like the Japanese concept of Asashi Clam with Wine but this one the sauce is kinda "soupy". Great with the French bread that comes with the meal! Eat the clam first, then enjoy the soup with breads!

3) Long Sausage - yes, its long (no pun intended, heh). 20" long. I believe, its made of pork and sage and other spices..My friend didn't like it but I like the fresh taste of it and its not greasy as the breakfast sausage we usually have at American Breakfast places.

Entree:

1) Squid Ink Spaghetti: Served in a bowl. Lots soup. Hearty! Squid Inks, squid chunks, bacon pieces, onions and au dante spagetti. Its garlic based flavor so if you don't like garlic, don't order it else this is a very good dish and unique one too (You can't find this very often in the American Chain Italian restaurants).

2) Lobster Fettuccine: Served with 1/2 lobster tail, clams, and mussels. Creamy white wine sauce with a hint of garlic and fresh peppers. I like the creamy pasta with lots dressing and the pasta does taste better with the sauce so make sure to stir for a bit before you eat it.

3) Four Cheeses Risotto: Served tableside in a sizzling hot stone pot. Reminds me of Korean style dosop bibimbop. Its very cheesy if you want me to tell you how the taste are like...and Unfortunately, I can not distinguish between the four cheeses. This is also our least favorite dish for tonight.

Dessert Tray: Like other Italian restaurants, they will bring you a tray with samples of desserts, we were too full to try it! Hopefully some other yelpers will write a detail review on their desserts!

A Solid 5 Star Lunch Experience.

Decided to visit here after consistent good reviews. However the special priced lunch set promotion was over. There are still lunch menu posted outside of the restaurant. There are set lunch where you can select either sashimi or sushi and one hot/cooked dish. Good value.

Parking: Ample free parking located in the Torrance Crossroads Center.

Now the food:

Salad - We all loved their house special dressing! Mayo, Ponzu (Citrus dressing) with 7 grounded peppers. Good restaurant made everything from scratch, not buying it from wholesale (i.e. see my review on Yuzu then you'll know what I meant).

Soup - Miso Soup. It will be nicer if they can put more dashi in the soup to make it more flavorful

Fried Oyster - part of the lunch combo. It was bigger than what we expected! Usually in other restaurant they give you small frozen oysters but here they give you about thumb size oysters, fried to perfection. Crispy yet still remains its natural juice within. It also comes with the house made Tartar dressing and tonkatsu dressing, while tonkatsu dressing is the better out of the two. My friend said she wants to buy a to go order of fried oyster, its that good :)

Miso Saba/Mackerel Fish - Simmered fish which the miso flavor totally blended into the fish. soft moist and tender. It also came with two mini side dishes. Very nicely presented as well.

The Sashimi that came with aboved two courses were the same. The chef selected Tuna, Salmon, Scallop, Needle Fish (which is the seasonal fish for spring, almost transparent meat with silver stripes as the skin). Amberjack and baby yellowtail. The qualities were all fresh and textures were good. No tendons in it. I consider its pretty good value to order combo.

The pickles that came with the lunch was house made cucumber and purple-dyed daikon. Crisp and presented nicely too.

My lunch dish was the chirashi sushi box. It came with approx 14 different types of ingredients. I listed in my own blog of each type of fish but the chef put almost all the good quality type of fish/shellfishes on top of it something like Uni, Chu toro, Ikura, Baby Yellowtail, Salmon Toro, Giant Clams..and much more. They are all fresh and I felt happy that I made the right choice. The portion is not that big so even a girl can finish it. However, listing/identifying each type of fish out is like a review of my knowledge of Japanese sushi fishes, glad that our server and chef was very kind and helpful to help me to recognize each type of fish and when they are in season. All I can say you get high quality of fishes and you are getting it for the quality not the quantity!. Chirashi sushi also come with the side of chikuzen-ni (sorta like vegetable stew with chicken) was also delicious.

Out of my curiousness, I decided to check their dinner menu out. Their dinner menu consists of the set menu, and Omakase style dinner too. Its pretty good value consider you are getting everything from appetizer to dessert. On top of the regular menu, they also have a daily special menu which consists of the fresh fish delivered from Japan and more.

I just can't wait for them to release their summer special menu. This place is small so it may be packed. If you have a large party, I recommend you to call ahead and make reservation. More pictures of this restaurant can be found in my own blog which is in my profile.

[Torrance] [American Cuisine] The Steak House, Torrance, CA - True Japanese Wagyu Beef

We all know the economy is still weak now and many high end
restaurants sacrificed their portion and/or quality in order to reduce
price on their menu to attract their customers. I am very pleased to
tell you that despite the strong JPY to USD exchange rate. This place
still offers excellent Wagyu Beef, imported directly from Japan
(Kagoshima-ken) to be exact. Its not called "Kobe" beef because its
not raised in Kobe. Its the misconception that Japanese beef are
called Kobe Beef. Its actually called Wagyu Beef, and the steak house
actually served the TOP quality A-5 Wagyu Beef (In Japan, they ranked
steak from A5>A1, B5>B1, C5>C1, where A5 is the Best in terms of the
texture, color, and marbleness).

For the dinner, we ordered the Dinner Course Surf & Turf Choice A, and
the regular Surf & Turf and some appetizers to share.

Dinner Course Choice A comes with 2 Appetizers:
1. Scallop Capaccio with Shrimp: Scallop shipped by Hokkaido. So
Fresh! doesn't need any dressing at all. The nature sweetness of the
scallop is the gift of mother nature :) It beats many of those sushi
restaurant's "fresh" scallop hands down.
2. Marinated Foie Gras in Miso with fruit compote. Wow, are you
telling me this is foie gras? WOW its SOOO GOOD! I can't believe this
is not on the regular menu. Its soooo delicious. The type of good
food that brings smile on everyone's face as soon as it reaches your
palate. So tender, smooth and full of flavor!

now the beef:

Wagyu Filet Mignon Steak: How nice can it be? its very nicely
presented. Cooked light brown, medium rare. I wish I can order a big
chunk of filet mignon! oh my god...it really does melt in your mouth!
Dry Aged beef thats served in other big chain steakhouses are good
(Ruth's Chris, Flemings, Maestros, Mortons..etc) but this is brings to
another level. I recommend trying the steak with their home made
steak house (composes of Garlic, Onions and Vinaigrette). You will be
never wrong splurge a little and try the wagyu beef here!

Grilled Chilean Seabass: Marinated in Miso. Very tender and fresh,
another excellent choice if you don't eat steak.

Roasted Lobster with Mustard Sauce: It was also a very good chewy and
tasty lobster. Its comparable to those seafood specialty restaurant.

Dessert: Their house special creme brulee in ice cream form WOWed us
too! Never had it Cream Brulee in ice cream form! So good!
Furthermore, their Vanilla Bean Yugurt Ice cream with nature honey is
the BEST! Nature honey blended perfectly with yogurt ice cream, not
too sweet, not too sour, and with the aroma from the vanilla and
honey..how can I not wanted more?

After we finished our meal, we were all very satisfied, actually ,
beyond satisfied. I actually went to shook hand with the chef, Ryo to
thank him for providing us such an excellent meal. I think to refer
this place to those who really understands and appreciates food, pass
the information out and let more people to support their business is
the best thing to do for them to show my appreciation!

Now I know where to find a real good steak! I just hope they will not
raise the price so I can come back for more delicious steak!
